Description

Two deadly encounters in Minneapolis have pushed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into the national spotlight.

In early January, two separate fatal shootings involving federal agents occurred just weeks apart. One involved Renee Good, described as a legal observer during an ICE operation. The second involved Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center who was reportedly filming agents during a federal operation.

Both incidents are under investigation. No charges have been announced. Body-cam footage has not been released.

Civil rights groups, labor organizations, and community leaders are demanding transparency and independent review. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called for a reassessment of federal enforcement tactics, while ICE and Border Patrol maintain agents operate under strict rules of engagement in dangerous conditions.

Supporters of ICE argue enforcement is necessary to uphold the law and protect the border — and say failures under Joe Biden and border czar Kamala Harris created the current crisis. Critics say tactics have grown too aggressive and disconnected from the communities affected.
