Swipe a bottle of beer and climb aboard the Thunder Road, because this week Jake and Pete are blasting off with Explorers from 1985.
Directed by Joe Dante and starring Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson, Explorers follows three young friends who use a mysterious circuit from a recurring dream to build their own homemade spacecraft.
Along the way, the boys discuss childhood inventions, talking mice, Jerry Goldsmith’s fantastic score, and whether the first two acts of this movie deserved a better ending than the completely bonkers alien television show we eventually received.
Is Explorers an overlooked 1980s classic, or a great childhood adventure that runs out of fuel before reaching the finish line?
