Living with FASD is an educational and human interest show for those living with the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, their loved one and anyone interested in learning more about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, brought to you by someone with both professional and living experience with FASD.
Many of the episodes bring to light many of the ways people are impacted by prenatal exposure to alcohol, and often times the overall lack of services are mentioned.
This week, I am shifting our focus to services that are available, at least if you are living in Los Angeles County. This week, I bring to you a panel discussion with several staff members of the
Violence Intervention Program in East Los Angeles, CA.
Michele Walker-Bauer, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and the Clinical Program Manager for the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Intervention Program at the Violence Intervention Program CMHC in Los Angeles. Since 2006, Michele has worked with families and children with FASD conducting psychological assessments and providing collateral, family, and group treatment. She is a trainer for the Families Moving Forward (FMF) program, a research-validated FASD intervention, and she provides FASD-informed supervision and consultation.
Janis Yue, OTD, OTR/L, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Occupational Therapy based at the Violence Intervention Program, a community-based mental health clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Yue coordinates occupational therapy program development for adolescent clients diagnosed with FASD, in addition to providing individualized mental health services alongside interdisciplinary
team members. With 5 years of experience working with clients of FASD, Dr. Yue centers values of disability justice and community-building in her care.
Ana C. Cardenas Rolon, is a licensed clinical social worker at the Violence Intervention Program-Community Mental Health Center (VIP-CMHC) in East Los Angeles and is currently the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Clinical Supervisor. Since 2012 she has been working with children who have been diagnosed with a FASD, providing bilingual individual, family, collateral, and group therapy. As of 2016 she became the FASD/Families Moving Forward Lead Clinician at VIP, providing support and leadership to newly trained clinicians.
Together, we discuss the programs offered by the Violence Intervention Program at the Community Mental Health Center, which also has the capacity to diagnose youth with an FASD within the medical portion of the clinic.
For those in Los Angeles County with children who are, or who may be, on the Spectrum, you can become involved with the VIP program by calling: 323-221-4134. The clinic is located at 1721 Griffin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90031.
