Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation where one person causes another to question their own reality, memory, or perceptions. It often involves denial, lying, or twisting facts to make someone feel confused or doubtful about what they know to be true. Over time, gaslighting can erode a person’s confidence and sense of self, making them more dependent on the manipulator. It’s a common tactic in abusive relationships and can be subtle or overt, but the goal is always control. Recognizing the signs—like constantly second-guessing yourself or apologizing when you’ve done nothing wrong—is key to breaking free from its effects.
