They've already determined the verdict, now they just need to find a charge that will stick. As they interrogate him, Jesus now definitely declares "I am the Christ." They would be right in declaring this to be blasphemy, except that it is true. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God who takes away the sin of the world.
