The religious scholars, the scribes, didn't know the answer. They enjoyed the fame and status they received from their prestigious positions, but they didn't know the Bible near as well as they pretended. Jesus exposes their hypocrisy, while demonstrating that he is the Messiah, the Son of David, and invites everyone to put their faith in him.
