I flera hundra år har krig varit en fråga för nationalstater och deras reguljära arméer. Men de senaste trettio åren har ett dramatiskt skifte skett. Fler och fler frontlinjer befolkas av soldater som inte krigar för sitt land, utan för pengar, eller naturresurser.

Redan på Medeltiden varnade Niccolò Machiavelli för legosoldatens svekfulla och förrädiska natur. Hade han rätt?
