Advent is a season of waiting and preparation. We’re patiently waiting for Christmas Day. We’re patiently waiting for the coming of our Lord. Our kids are (somewhat) patiently waiting for the joy that comes with Christmas morning.
What we often miss is: are we being patient with ourselves?
How quickly do we get frustrated with ourselves? That we’re not far enough along on the path to heaven. That we’re not holy enough. That we keep stumbling into the same sins day after day.
It’s hard to see the full picture. Hard to see how far we’ve come and the small steps we’ve made. But it’s easy to see how far we still have to go—and that distance shouldn’t cause frustration.
It should invite patience.
We are broken. Imperfect. Clumsy. We mess things up. But that’s not a cause for frustration—it’s a cause for humility. For turning to our Lord in recognition that we’re going to keep messing this up, but we need His help. His grace. His guidance. His wisdom.
All these things in His time, not ours.
So this Advent, as we practice patience waiting for Christ’s coming, maybe we can practice a little patience with ourselves too. Because the God who became a child to save us knows exactly how much growing we still need to do.
And He’s patient enough to walk with us every step of the way.
