"Go to Holy Communion even when you feel lukewarm, leaving everything in God's hands. The more my sickness debilitates me, the more urgently do I need a doctor." —Saint Bonaventure

Are any of us actually worthy to receive the Eucharist? It's too great of a gift. Every time we approach, we pray: "Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed."

The Church teaches that when we're in a state of mortal sin, we should first go to Confession, then receive the Eucharist. Which I totally get. But there are times when you're not in mortal sin—you just don't feel worthy.

That's where Saint Bonaventure's words hit home.

We are sick. We need healing. Sometimes the prescription is Confession. But the medicine is always the Eucharist—Christ Himself coming to us in our weakness.

It would be a tactic of the devil to keep us away when we most need Him. To make us think the holy thing to do is stay distant from Christ.

The more debilitated we feel, the more urgently we need the Doctor. We always need Him. And we always need His healing.
