Useless Things

What you give your attention to becomes your reality.

I recently read this in a book about our online habits. The author’s point was simple: if you spend all day reading articles about crime, you’ll start seeing potential threats on every street corner.

What you consume through your eyes, through your ears, through conversations—it all affects how you see the world, how you see yourself, how you see other people.

There are things we do, traps we fall into, that are completely useless in our journey toward holiness.

I like that word. Useless.

Not necessarily sinful. Not always bad. But they don’t help. They don’t move us forward.

They might be entertaining. They might fill our boredom. But they provide no help on the journey.

Scrolling mindlessly. Consuming content that leaves us empty. Conversations that drag us down. Thoughts we entertain that lead nowhere good.

These things take our attention. And what we give our attention to becomes our reality.

So the question is: What am I giving my attention to?

Is it helping me grow in holiness? Or is it useless?

Let us pray.

Lord, help us see clearly what deserves our attention and what doesn’t. Give us the wisdom to recognize the useless things. Teach us to guard our eyes, our ears, our minds and to give our attention to what draws us closer to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keep fighting the good fight. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us.
