Reporting from Jerusalem, I take you deep into one of Judaism’s most profound observances—Tisha B’av, the 9th day of Av, beginning this Saturday at sunset. While most Christians know about Yom Kippur, few understand this remarkable day of collective mourning that commemorates devastating tragedies throughout Jewish history.

From the spies’ fearful report about the Promised Land to the destruction of both Temples, from medieval expulsions to the Holocaust’s “Final Solution”—all occurred on this date. As Israel fights on multiple fronts today, facing false accusations of starvation in Gaza while facilitating over 100 million meals through independent organizations, this ancient day of grief becomes deeply relevant.

I explore how Jews validate sorrow through community participation—sitting shiva, fasting together, reading Lamentations and Job. Unlike Western Christianity’s often uncomfortable relationship with grief, Judaism embraces both individual pain and collective mourning. As we watch Israel navigate current conflicts while entering this season of remembrance, there’s much we can learn about authentic faith that doesn’t avoid life’s darkest valleys.

Three Critical Needs, One Urgent Response

This month, three urgent needs have captured our hearts, and God is calling us to respond with unprecedented generosity. Rather than supporting one organization this month, we’re partnering with three vital organizations that are addressing some of the most pressing needs across Israel. The Israel Air Force Association, Soroka Medical Center, and Brothers in Arms (Hamal).

With your gift of any amount—perhaps $18, $36, $180 or $1800 to honor the Hebrew tradition of “chai” (life)—you’ll receive a complete digital version of Jimmy Evans’ book, Talking to Kids About the End Times: A Brief Guide to an Eternal Conversation.
