This message was originally preached on March 8, 2020, during the Lenten season. The message of forgiveness is particularly appropriate during Lent, because the suffering we experience in response to another person’s wrongdoing can feel like a wilderness in its own right. Faithfulness to God requires our willful orientation toward forgiveness. But before we can release an offense to God, we must first (as C.S. Lewis said) “[see] it in all its horror, dirt, meanness and malice.” This message includes a practical reflection and prayer time at the end.
Scripture passage: Matthew 18:21-35
