On today’s episode of Carmichael Clan Radio, we’re delighted to be joined by Professor Gerard Carruthers of the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Robert Burns Studies. Dr. Carruthers is the Francis Hutcheson Chair of Scottish Literature, the Founding Director of the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, and the author of multiple books, articles, and other publications.
With Burns Night just around the corner, we wanted to sit down with Dr. Carruthers to talk about Scotland’s national bard — the poet and lyricist Robert Burns. Who was the man that has forever captured Scotland’s heart, and what isit about Burns that makes him unquestionably the most celebrated among Scottish poets?
In the episode, we also examine some of the history and traditions behind Burns Night suppers and celebrations that are held each January 25th in countries around the world. Dr. Carruthers shares with us some of the highlights of a Burns Supper and gives some advice on taking on your first Burns Supper.
