LyricsSome say that the love of the wanderlustIs just a life that won’t amount to much,A man born with rambling shoesIs just another man born to looseI want to set the record straightBefore I hit the road today
Got a ragtop car, enough gas to take us farEnough away, cause I plan to drive all-dayWhen the evening comes
We’ll be like loaded gunsOut in the night shooting stars out the sky, baby
When the blue sky’s lost in a concrete mazeI get the feeling, I wanna get lost for daysLace up my rambling shoesGet a chance to beat the 3rd street bluesRace up the Taconic ParkwayDrive until the break of Day
Make a love stop along the way
Got a ragtop car, enough gas to take us farEnough away, cause I plan to drive all-dayWhen the evening comes
We’ll be like loaded gunsOut in the night shooting stars out the sky, baby
I got myself a roady in my handTalking Pabst Blue ribbon, in a canI’m not trying to be tough
Just priming up the motor of loveGotta loosen up Here come my baby struttin’ that stuff.
Got a ragtop car, enough gas to take us farEnough away, cause I plan to drive all-dayWhen the evening comes
We’ll be like loaded gunsOut in the night shooting stars out the sky, baby
About the SongRagtop Car is the last of a series of songs recorded in the spring of 2022 in a studio-live setting with minimal overdubs. We played the song two times back to back. The extended take was the second take where we stretched our legs a bit and explored some ideas while jamming the song out. Our normal tracking workflow leaves the drums & bass untouched, then we sparingly overdub the rest to achieve a sound true to our live performances. No click tracks were used, no quantization, just a legendary local drummer, Mike Hunt whom I played with years ago in another band. Local San Diego musician and engineer, Mike Butler takes care of the mixing and mastering.About the DaySeptember 8 was a classic California Indian Summer afternoon. It provided sweltering heat, Santa Ana winds, perfect surf. By the time I had all the equipment set up, I thought I was going to melt onto the stage. Throughout the show surfers and beachgoers came up the stairs, through the pentagon, to be treated with our band’s newly released music.
The full band was in top form from a packed summer of gigging, and I was in great shape (with great singing lungs) minus the knee pains that plagued me just a few months later. So often the show, the performance is enhanced by those in attendance. Some of my closest friends were there that day.
When I listened to the tapes of this show, the magic is undeniable.
You can see the locals moving in and out of the landscape, the Captain Kenos hat is worn my my brother in arms Mr. Able Perez, he’s an unofficial member of the band. When I first started writing, he was on bass. I think my favorite performance that night was ‘Come Easily’, it was as good that night as I’ve ever heard it played. A few weeks after, when I listened to the tapes of this show, the magic is undeniable.About the RamMark "The Ram" O'Donnell is an independent American composer, producer, filmmaker, multi-instrumental performer, designer, and visual artist based out of Carlsbad, California.
