Lyrics

Scarlet BegoniasJerome J. Garcia / Robert C. HunterAs I was walkin' 'round Grosvenor SquareNot a chill to the Winter but a nip to the airFrom the other direction, she was calling my eyeIt could be an illusion, but I might as well try, might as well try

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoesAnd I knew, without askin', she was into the bluesShe wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curlsI knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls

In the thick of the evening, when the dealing got roughShe was too pat to open and too cool to bluffAs I picked up my matches and was closing the doorI had one of those flashes, I'd been there before, I'd been there before

Well, I ain't always right, but I've never been wrongSeldom turns out the way it does in a songOnce in a while, you get shown the lightIn the strangest of places if you look at it right

Well, there ain't nothing wrong with the way she movesOr scarlet begonias or a touch of the bluesAnd there's nothing wrong with the look that's in her eyesI had to learn the hard way to let her pass by, let her pass by

Wind in the willow's playin' "Tea For Two"The sky was yellow, and the Sun was blueStrangers stoppin' strangers, just to shake their handEverybody's playing in the heart of gold band, heart of gold band

Fire On the MountainJerome J. Garcia / Robert C. HunterLong distance runner, what you standin' there for?Get up, get out, get out of the doorYou're playin' cold music on the barroom floorDrowned in your laughter and dead to the coreThere's a dragon with matches that's loose on the townTakes a whole pail of water just to cool him down

Fire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountain

Almost ablaze, still you don't feel the heatIt takes all you got just to stay on the beatYou say it's a livin', we all gotta eatBut you're here alone, there's no one to competeIf Mercy's a business, I wish it for youMore than just ashes when your dreams come true

Fire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountain

Long distance runner, what you holdin' out for?Caught in slow motion in a dash for the doorThe flame from your stage has now spread to the floorYou gave all you had, why you wanna give more? The more that you give, the more it will takeTo the thin line beyond, which you really can't fake

Fire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountainFire! Fire on the mountain

About the DayDays rarely get any better than these. It was a fine June Saturday in Carlsbad, California and it was a perfect way to say goodby to family, friends, and the band. In a few days I would be gone: flying off to Greece for the remainder of the month, then coming back stateside for a family reunion in Upstate New York.

My oldest just graduated Carlsbad High, kids were out in numbers, the summer was in full effect. Everyone was out in full force. To meet the crowd, we had a bunch of new material. We played 4 songs that we had never really played as arranged that night before, but we were feeling it. We had just finished programming the new Nord Stage 4 we picked up of the keyboard player, Mike Pritchard. Thus the reason why the keys sound like an interstellar spaceship.
