Football fans are always an optimistic bunch, but even the most ardent Gills fans heading into Priestfield on Saturday would have taken their seats concerned about how the afternoon might pan out.
But, despite lining up against a second-placed Bradford City side that could have gone top with a win, Gillingham produced a superb battling team performance to claim a hard-earned 1-0 win.
After a lengthy spell out injured with tendonitis, centre half Conor Masterson returned to the starting lineup and marked his comeback with the only goal of the game as he turned smartly and fired a low effort into the Rainham End net to seal the three points.
It was a huge win for the Gills, who moved 12 points clear of the relegation zone and, potentially out of serious relegation danger.
In Sunday’s post-match pod, Tom Jasper takes the helm to look back at the result, the team’s performance, and discuss the key players in the Gills’ victory.
