Mid-way through the first half of their away game at Swindon Town, it was all looking rosy for the Gills. They were 1-0 up, courtesy of a Tim Dieng finish, Swindon were down to 10 men and the Gills were comfortably in charge.
But the team’s mental fragility came to the fore as they sat back and played with a concerning amount of fear as they desperately looked to hold on to their slender lead, despite having the numerical advantage.
And, three minutes into stoppage time, the inevitable happened as Swindon, aided by some defending that would make even a schoolboy side embarrassed, scored a last-gasp equaliser.
It meant a win turned into a draw, but it felt like a defeat as the Gills’ current winless run extends to six, with little optimism to show for another demoralising showing.
