Hey Everyone,
Last week was a big week of lives and I’m slowly getting the replays posted. I’m always delighted to chat with Allison Wiltz. I’ve known her for years on Medium, and it’s always so fun to hear her thoughts.
I find that every day is a struggle to come to grips with the true horrors of American society. I didn’t want to believe that we were morally bankrupt to the point where we’d give power to sex offenders and racists, but that’s the reality of this nation. We keep seeing evidence of it again and again, even though the media never calls awful people out on their appalling and disrespectful behavior.
We recorded this just a day after the Republican group chat was leaked that contained all kinds of racist and rape culture comments. Naturally, the GOP responded by trying to blame “Gen Z.” Allison discusses how the malicious forces in our society always infantilize white supremacy, while holding other groups, particularly the Black community to an impossible standard.
This manifests in the fact that a progressive candidate who might have made an inappropriate remark when he was 19 is forced to resign, while a Republican that’s actually been found guilty in court of various serious crimes is allowed to continue unopposed. The double standard is appalling.
I also like that Allison brought in the concept of white mediocrity. There is plenty of evidence of white culture being celebrated at the expense of all others, and at some point we should pause and recognizing the damaging effect that has on our psyche.
As always, it was an enlightening and informative conversation with Allison, she’s one of my absolute favorite writers! You can follow her here:
