Hey Everyone!
I really appreciated this conversation. We started off discussing Ben Ulansey’s wonderful article “A Trump Supporter Walked Into a Bar.” In it, Ben Struggles with a lot of the same questions I’ve had about whether it’s productive to try to reach MAGA, or whether we should just walk away.
As always, Will Fullwood provides tremendous insight into this topic. I appreciate that he encourages us not to look at these kind of interactions as win/lose. Instead, all we can do is provide an opportunity for self reflection. But ultimately, it’s up to everyone to chose whether or not they’re going to live a life of integrity.
One of my big takeaways from this talk is that we need to protect ourselves when we have interactions with people who harbor hostile ideologies. It does us no good to think of ourselves as “failures” if we don’t convince them they are wrong. If we look at it that way, we become disinclined to practice our activism. Instead, we have to give ourselves credit simply for speaking words of compassion.
There’s a lot in this talk to think about. I hope you all find it as enlightening as I did. You can subscribe to Ben here:
