I think we have to come to a hard realization of what awaits us. I’ve been working diligently with the hope that if enough of us came together, we could overcome adversity and peacefully take back our country using the election process.

But when we look back on the last few election cycles, there are pretty significant questions about the integrity of our system. The current individual holding office is a 34-time convicted felon for business fraud related to election interference.

He’s demonstrated throughout the course of his life that he has no qualms against being dishonest and deceitful whenever it serves his purpose. In fact, I can’t recall an instance of him telling the truth or showing respect for a single institution of our country.

As you look around at the smoking ruin that our nation has become, it’s hard to believe that anybody would voluntarily cast a vote in favor of the Republicans. Yet, even in the last primary cycle, we’ve seen results that are inconsistent with what has happened in past elections. In Kentucky, we saw a candidate win who was endorsed by an historically unpopular president with a turnout that was twice as large as had ever been seen in that primary before.

There are multiple accounts, such as This Will Hold, Election Truth Alliance, and Its Up to Us that have been offering warnings about the malicious forces that mess with our elections.

We have a responsibility to ensure that our elections are free and fair. There can be no putting your hands in your pockets and assuming everything will be fine. That’s an abdication of duty. That’s cowardly.

Naturally, enemies of our country would try to sabotage our elections. This applies to men who are facing sentencing for criminal acts. This applies to men who have already revealed their character through a lifetime of heinous acts.

Based on that history, it’s not so unreasonable to assume these men would be quite willing to disenfranchise the entire American public to avoid paying their debt to society. We’re talking about men who boast about not paying any debt of any kind.

We must all participate in doing the work of preserving our democracy. That work entails forging bonds within our community, elevating good people, and coordinating in a way that is not dependent on captured and malicious platforms.

We have to make efforts to get together in public, to have meetings, and to fortify each other in preparation both for the best and for the worst. Because if these elections come, and the result is unexpected, we have to demand proof. We can’t afford to let a questionable result go uncontested ever again.

It has never been the case in our country that a president who was facing historically low popularity would be the beneficiary of a massive political win in the midterms. That has never happened.

When the president is a criminal, you cannot trust a historic anomaly as a legitimate result. We always have the right to demand recounts and forensic audits. Do not allow them to make us accept a contested fact as unquestionable proof.

We have a right to ask questions.

If we awaken on the day after the midterms, and see that once again all the polls and predictions were wrong, we should pause. If we are expected to believe that, despite their cruelty and incompetence, the Republicans have seemingly charged to victory, we should be skeptical. If we are told that they managed to win even in states where Republicans historically fail, we should resolve to become steadfast.

I believe we’re about to have a hard moment of reckoning with reality. There is already strong evidence that we have endured the elevation of a man who was not chosen by the people. There are some who suggest we have been forced to suffer the abuses of an illegitimate leader who was appointed by deceit rather than a legitimate victory. He has used the levers of power not to the benefit of the people, but to inflict agony on the innocent, on ourselves, and on our children.

If, after the midterms, we awaken to discover that we are even more deprived of agency than we have been for these last two miserable years, we cannot retreat from the challenge. If that moment comes, we will be forced to fall back on the communities we’ve been creating. We will have to come together to meet each other where we stand and where we live, and have long, hard talks about what comes next.

Above all else, we must recognize our responsibility to preserve our autonomy, our way of life, and our basic, fundamental freedoms. We have no obligation to lay back and allow tyrants to murder us without any resistance.

This resolve should be in the back of our minds as we approach every election. We can’t be passive in the face of election theft. They have already taken more than anyone should ever be expected to give.

Until that moment comes, let us continue to work hard. Let us continue to have hope that good will prevail. Let us hope that our laws and our rights will be respected.

But we also have to be realistic and recognize that our laws and our rights have been violated again and again as a consequence of the criminality of the current Republican regime.

We’re asking them to stop.

First, we’ll ask nicely.

Then we’ll make it clear that we will not allow malicious forces to erode our country from the inside. No matter how much power cruel men acquire, they cannot make human beings forget their essential longing to be free.
