Description

Let me say this loud enough for everyone in the back:

I don’t care how a child arrived in this country.

Whether they were born here or crossed a border seeking safety, they are ours. And we are theirs.

As an organizer, as a parent, and as a citizen, I believe with every fiber of my being that no child should suffer because of a choice their parent made in pursuit of hope, dignity, or survival.

I’ve stood outside the ICE facility in Miramar, Florida. I’ve met children holding hands with their siblings, clutching their backpacks, or sleeping in strollers—waiting while their parents checked in with federal agents. I never asked those children where they were born or what documents their families carried.

That’s not what matters.

What matters is this: They are human. They are children. They are in need. And we—as mothers, neighbors, and Americans—have a moral duty to meet them with care, not cruelty.

Our job is not to divide families or deny belonging.

Our job is to comfort. To protect. To build a country where every child can thrive.

No child should be punished for crossing a border or being born in the US, and no family should be trapped in fear simply for seeking refuge.

I refuse to be complicit in any system that rips children from their communities or denies their humanity.

Because being American is not about exclusion—it’s about standing up for one another.

Let this be clear: All children born here belong here. And every child who comes here seeking safety deserves dignity, respect, and protection.

Not detention. Not deportation. Not indifference.

This is the kind of country we must fight for—one where compassion is stronger than cruelty, and people come before politics.

They are mine. I am theirs.

This is not about left vs. right—it’s about right vs. wrong.

I’m sharing this because tomorrow , the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments that could reshape the meaning of citizenship in America.

At stake is birthright citizenship—the constitutional guarantee that any child born in the United States is a citizen, no matter their parents’ immigration status. Tomorrow’s piece will break down what birthright citizenship really means, what’s at stake in this Supreme Court case, and how the outcome could reshape our entire community.

But for now, I’ll leave you with this:

As my sign says: “I don’t know you, but you are my child now. And I will never stop fighting for you.”

Because in this moment—we rise for every child, every family, and every right worth defending.
