I Ate My Hat

‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!

We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.

🤓 Awkward? Yes.

😬 Cringy? Mmmhmm.

🤩 Fun? The most.

Here are a few highlights and most of the promised links from this week’s convo (for all of them, visit our post directly on Substack via knockitoff.substack.com):

0:55 — Life updates and stories (“I have so much venom in my feet right now…” “They attacked me over my rubber.”)

5:14 — Bethany finished Personal History: A Memoirby Katharine Graham (A Pulitzer Prize winner by the subject of The Post!) (Bethany: “I’m in my Watergate era.”)

10:25 — Katharine Graham deserves the “Pedigree of Paula” moment this month

11:15 — We eat crow about our last Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce predictions

14:55 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” (“I ate my hat.”)

17:15 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! (“And now we have a smashed duck.” “That ducky wasn’t so lucky.”) Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments!

21:16 — “Taste of Kara”— a few things Kara’s into at the moment. Kara finished The Last Castle: The Epic Story of Love, Loss, and American Royalty in the Nation's Largest Homeby Denise Kiernan. Kara provides three lesser-known tidbits that stood out.

We also discuss Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Ann Fowler - we both give this one high praise despite our strong preference for non-fiction!

32:40— Kara breezed through the audiobook of Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. This one was recommended by our Substack pal Jen who writes Recently Enjoyed Things. You can find her take on Astor in her May 24 edition. Jen is hilarious and always has A+ recommendations. Consider subscribing!

37:50— NYT piece Conan O’Brien Doesn’t Matter* by Jason Zinoman, featuring the Hot Ones appearance that caused Conan to go viral more so than the late night appearance in the same week!

43:15 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances) (“The gurus tell me if I keep doing this, I’m going to be rich.”)

45:48 — Kara fixed her Nespresso machine using a Youtube life hack video! If you listen to no other part of this week’s convo . . . (“You might experience splashing in your face.”)
