In this new interview, I had the chance to talk with veteran journalist Bill Grueskin about The 69-Year-Old Rookie, his thought-provoking piece in the Columbia Journalism Review about a recent stint he spent working in the Salt Lake Tribune newsroom, as well as another piece he wrote about how sloppy journalism led the New York Times to lose a defamation case for the first time.
We talk about the use of reader data, the rise of video, the tensions created by paywalls — the Tribune recently removed its paywall — and whether the paper had changed too much or whether it was changing too slowly. I had the feeling that perhaps the paper — and the journalism industry writ large — might be moving to slowly. My sense is that Grueskin agreed with me only somewhat.
