Alan Gottlieb has deep, deep roots in education journalism, having founded or co-founded several education news outlets over the years: Education News Colorado, Chalkbeat, and now Boardhawk.
In this new interview, Gottlieb shares his take on Colorado’s “Balkanized” education news ecosystem, the much-diminished number of reporters covering schools in Colorado, and the coverage being produced by Chalkbeat’s Colorado outpost.
“I’m very proud of having co-founded Chalkbeat, and I still think it’s an amazing accomplishment — and that Elizabeth Green is a superstar who’s done amazing work and that it continues to be a really impressive organization,” he says. “But that doesn’t mean I don’t have criticisms.”
