In this episode, I’m exploring the themes of masculinity and male initiation through the lens of classic films...
It dawned on me recently that we are suffering from a lack of quality movies that portray stories we can all relate to from a meaning-standpoint, not necessarily plot. Men in particular are given nothing but egomaniacal or weak or violent displays of “masculinity” that reflect to them in an inordinate exemplar of acting as a Man.
For that reason, my thirst for better story-telling led me to a string of excellent films...
In movies such as ‘The Man from Snowy River’, ‘Dead Poets Society’, ‘Newsies’ and ‘Legends of the Fall’, a host of motifs play out that reflect the journey of men in society, the importance of legacy, and the role of community and brotherhood.
The art of subtle storytelling also appears in stark contrast to what we’re used to, making this worth the while of any and all listeners to revisit these films for their timeless messages.
