Despite efficiency gains, the energy usage of large data centers has been rising 20–40% per year since 2020. The International Energy Agency projects AI adoption could add ~200 TWh/year of data center consumption from 2023 to 2030. In the U.S. alone, data center load is expected to jump from ~25 GW in 2024 to over 80 GW by 2030, largely due to AI.
