Description

I have always had a personal fascination and love for the sensation and sounds of walking through snow. All kinds of snow, deep snow, shallow snow. I don’t know quite what it is that I like so much, but snow deadens other kinds of sounds, particularly on a quiet night or an early morning and I find this is the best time to go snow walking, when the clarity of the sounds are at their best.

This last week we had snow here, which was very, very powdery, due to temperatures that were somewhere between -5 and -11ºC. It didn’t give me quite the satisfaction I craved for, but then something very special happened. It warmed up a little and there was a freezing rain/fog and it coated all of that very powdery snow, with a reasonable thickness of ice. Everywhere was glistening and glazed. So beautiful to look at.

The result was so satisfying to walk through. As you stepped on that snow, with the ice layer above, it cracked with a higher level of reward than you feel when you are cracking through the caramelised top of a mouthwatering creme brûlée.

It was so crunchy! So very crunchy!

So I ask you: Is it just satisfyingly crunchy, or when you turn the lights out and you listen to this video, is it an ASMR for you?
