The Garden of the Heart Ep. 4

After letting C.S. Lewis take us on a tour of the glories and dangers of friendship, we look at the heart of the scandalous nature of the gospel—in Christ we are friends of God.

In antiquity the three elements of true friendship were thought to be unity, mutuality/reciprocity, and equality. How is it that God can share these things with us? Can we be in a mutual and reciprocal relationship with God? Can we have equality with God? It all feels like too much to ask, and yet Jesus says, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15).
