In this episode, Jonathan talks about his history of health and social challenges from childhood through to adulthood. When he was told that he was likely to lose his hearing by the age of thirty it took a toll on his mental health.
One day, his father, who was a marathoner, suggested going for a run. The simple suggestion started at 1 mile but then led to longer distances and became a habit. Through help from his doctors and consistent physical exercise, Jon was able to lose weight and ran his first 5k race. He went from strength to strength and ultimately finished his first marathon. Even though afterwards he was in lot of pain from the marathon, he realized that he was capable of doing difficult things!
That experience has led Jon to consistently challenge himself and since then he has done triathlons, Ironmans, Muay Thai, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu and mountain-biking. It has become a way of life for him. Even his instagram handle is joncantry to reinforce his can do spirit. Coincidentally our show is called TryAthlete :).
