Description

This week on the Juco Pod, we sit down with the New Head Coach of the College of Southern Nevada, Nick Aiello.

We talk:

* The Homecoming: Nick Aiello discusses returning to his hometown of Las Vegas to become the head baseball coach at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) after spending 15 years coaching at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI).

* Playing Career & Texas Roots: Aiello reflects on his playing days at Grayson County College in Texas under legendary coach Tim Tadlock. He highlights the intense, “dogfight” culture of Texas JUCO baseball before eventually transferring to CSI to finish his career.

* Taking the CSN Job: He explains his whirlwind hiring process after his predecessor, Nick Garitano, left for UNLV. Aiello notes that recruiting and retaining players was easier than expected because of CSN’s elite national brand, rich history (including Bryce Harper), and top-tier facilities.

* Coaching Philosophy & Ted Lasso: Aiello emphasizes relationship-building, transparency, and developing young men for life after baseball (as good fathers, husbands, and citizens) rather than just “winning at all costs.” He heavily cites the TV show Ted Lasso as an inspiration for his open-door policy and giving players ownership of the program.

* The Reality of “JUCO Life”: He shares wild, authentic junior college baseball stories, including playing on subpar fields, dodging rattlesnakes, and an opposing coach secretly fixing the host team’s pitching mound to protect a 4th-round MLB draft pick from getting hurt.

* Evolving Regions & Super Regionals: Aiello discusses the landscape of JUCO baseball, the shrinking of Region 18, the move to the highly competitive Region 1, and how CSN is positioning itself to be a perennial host for the upcoming JUCO Super Regional format.

* Vegas Baseball Boom & UNLV Rivalry: He talks about the excitement surrounding the MLB’s Oakland A’s moving to Las Vegas and the historic, upcoming first-ever matchup between CSN and UNLV (which is now coached by his friend and predecessor, Nick Garitano).

* Vegas Sports Culture: Aiello notes that Vegas is a city built on winners, pointing to the massive success, high standards, and passionate fanbases of the local Golden Knights (NHL) and Aces (WNBA).

* Scheduling & Travel Quirks: He expresses a desire to schedule tougher out-of-region opponents (like Texas or California schools) to prepare for the postseason. However, he admits he refuses to fly after a terrifying small-plane experience and will always travel by bus.

* Dream Golf Foursome: In the final rapid-fire question, Aiello reveals his dream golf partners would be fictional characters Ted Lasso, Coach Beard, and Roy Kent, praising their dynamic as the ultimate, supportive, and entertaining coaching staff.
