Description

This episode is dedicated to Thomas’s brother, William “Billy” Dilworth, whom you can read about here in the New York Times.

“The main theme of this great poem is metamorphosis,” says Dr. Thomas Dilworth about the poem The Hunt by David Jones. He adds, “The entire poem is an adverbial clause…and yet it’s cosmic warfare.” Dr. Dilworth is the preeminent David Jones scholar, and he joins us today to talk about the magnificent poem The Hunt.

There is much packed into this episode, so we encourage you to pay close attention to all that Dr. Dilworth has to say. The Hunt is a poem for our time, inasmuch as it is a balm of hope for the suffering—while never minimizing the human condition. Below you will find a written version of the poem, which you can read as you listen to David Jones’s own voice.

Here is the PDF of The Hunt typed-out by Sam, himself:

The music used throughout this episode is “The Lark Ascending” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. You can enjoy the full piece here:

In lieu of our standard biography of Dr. Thomas Dilworth, who is becoming a ‘regular’ on the show, we thought we’d share with you about his daughter, Alison. Alison Dilworth is a wonderful artist in Philadelphia. You can learn about her here, and you can follow her on Instagram.
