For the nearly six decades the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has been around, they have educated, entertained and informed. The CPB covers PBS, NPR and stations nationwide, some of which may be the only radio stations in many far reaches of the country. But Congress voted to take the funding from the Corporation for good. Some of these stations may be gone forever now, let's forget Elmo for a second, this leaves many of these remote spots without local news and emergency alerts in places without internet.
PBS says even though it only gets a small amount of funding from the fed, they will still have to scale back spending. NPR announced last week it would cut spending and use that money to try to save some of their smaller stations so they can stay on the air. But it still may not save their local news departments.
It's not the first time the Republican party went after the CPB, but this time they were finally successful after Pres. Trump made it a priority to claw the money back. The president also reportedly threatened to withhold his support and endorsements for lawmakers who didnโt vote his way.
The lone Democrat on the FCC said after the rescissions package passed, that it was about โsilencing those who report the news accurately, without fear or favor.โ
In all it could take about 30 local stations off the air, or they may survive, but will have to run national programming and nothing local. ๐ชซ
