Description

For this episode I am joined with habit researcher, author and speaker Dr Gina Cleo. After reading her book The Habit Revolution and knowing from my own experience both the struggles and power of habits, I was so excited to able to have a deep dive into our behaviour and habits and break down some of the myths around motivation- about how it can lead to failed diets and a bad relationship with food and our bodies. Habits- they aren’t a quick fix, nor are they a one off thing, they are the result of being consistent over a long time and as Dr Gina Cleo puts it “don’t sound sexy” but they are actually the only proven way of long term change. After seeing so many failed attempts at change seen in her clients as a dietician that don’t come down to their lack of willpower of mental strength, Dr Gina Cleo then dedicated her life to understading and researching the role of habits. In this episode, we talk about the importance of our environment and minimising our temptations because willpower, just like a muscle fatigues over time- the more you resist the temptation, the more likely you are to cave later on in the day. Dr Gina Cleo shares a few practical tips for making a healthier environment around us such as keeping our phones away from our beds so we don’t hit snooze in the morning. (I know how tempting it is, escpecially with this cold weather!)We dive into habits- how 70% of everything we do is habitual and she talks about the reflexive and reflective part of our brain. She also explains why it can be hard to pave our own path- due to our evolutionary, we are made to fit in to aid in our survival so our brain rewards us when we do behaviours similar to others.
