Welcome to week ten of my sixteen-week guided slow read of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.
Chapter 10 is the strangest turn in the novel so far: Pasternak mislays his own protagonist. With Yury carried off by the Forest Brotherhood, the lens pulls back to take in the whole of Kolchak's Siberia — a grocer's wife fainting at Matins, frightened boys toasting a victory they don't believe in, a handful of ageing revolutionaries bickering in a photographer's shed. Zhivago himself survives only as a rumour: a famous doctor from Moscow, heard of but never seen.
In this instalment I work through the chapter section by section — the history behind Admiral Kolchak and the Whites, the Holy Week framing and the thaw, Galuzina's grief and her uneasy nostalgia, and the secret meeting where an old face from the train to the Urals resurfaces in a new political guise. As always, I compare the Hayward–Harari and Pevear–Volokhonsky translations against Pasternak's Russian, and stop on the lines where the choices really matter.
