On Saturday I arrived on the small island of Malta, which is to the west of Greece under Sicily. There are nine ancient temples in Malta that pre-date the Egyptian pyramids. They were built in 3,600 B.C. and beyond (over 6,000 years ago!). Some remains have been found from 7,000 B.C.
They are called “megaliths” because they were built with large stones. In the Tarxien Temple, you enter through a stone arch before seeing a colossal stone statue of a woman in a skirt (which I believe represented the goddess). Surrounding her are large stones with spiral carvings.
