Do you feel this constant pressure to do ALL the things? Are you addicted to work and productivity? Do you feel guilty about resting when your to-do list isn't done (which, let's be real it NEVER is!).
Welcome to hustle culture, which refers to the way we place a high status and importance on work in today's society. In general, the culture in the US prioritizes work over connection, creativity, and joy- and in many ways it's costing us our wellbeing.
Hustle culture is particularly rampant in the medical field, and the pressure to keep working at all costs is a huge contributor to burnout.
In this episode, I have a very special guest, Dr. Brianna Turgeon (yupp, my sister!) who is a sociology professor at Jacksonville State University.
Brianna unpacks the cultural narratives, media messaging and systems that contribute to our obsession with working nonstop.
By understanding where hustle culture comes from- we can distance ourselves from the belief that we should ALWAYS be working, and start to create a new, healthier narrative.
In this episode we discuss the historical origins of hustle culture, the way our current systems are set up to normalize and perpetuate excessive hard work, and how we can start to relieve the guilt associated with resting to truly take some time off.
This is an incredible episode full of paradigm shifting insights as well as practical suggestions for mounting a resistance against hustle culture.
