Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies
A Studio in the Woods invite artists to face the severity of the climate crisis and be agents of change to guide our collective understanding, response, and vision as we shape our shared future. New Orleans and the inhabitants of the region are frequently invoked as some of the most vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation. While sea levels, temperatures and emotions are rising, our highly manipulated landscape can be seen as a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the reckoning and hope which are required in the ways humans interact with shifting urban and natural ecosystems. As the climate crisis permeates the collective understanding of the future, the challenges faced by Southern Louisiana resonate exponentially. We look to artists to ignite our imaginations, illuminate our challenges, and offer new ways to examine the world.
Budget: $3000 as a stipend and $2000 towards materials.
Deadline: Thursday 10th March 2022

Key astrological transits for January
Sunday 2nd January ~ New Moon in Capricorn (12 degrees)
A New Moon in Capricorn asks us to create safety and security by accomplishing tasks and proving ourselves as productive members of society. When the Moon is in Capricorn we have the tendency to push ourselves, working harder to get new projects and intentions off the ground to the point where we feel depleted. The Moon is at it’s detriment in Capricorn and (as the Moon rules your physical self) during this period you may have a difficult time connecting to and nourishing your body. Remember that self sacrifice is not always conducive with self care.
Monday 10th January ~ Sun sextile Neptune (Capricorn - Pisces at 21 degrees)
Neptune in Pisces makes us intuitive and creative about our dreams. This lovely angle with a hardworking Capricorn Sun allows us to strategise the best way to make our dreams reality. A perfect day to vision board and review your plans for 2022.
Tuesday 11th January ~ Mars square Neptune (Sagittarius - Pisces at 21 degrees)
This harsh angle between Mars and Neptune (that coincides with Mercury’s pre-retrograde shadow) suggests that key details are missing or being distorted from a proposal, situation or contract. Be wary of anything that sounds too good to be true and when in doubt ask for further clarification.
Friday 14th January ~ Mercury goes retrograde (Rx)
During Mercury’s retrograde period you can expect delays and misunderstandings in communications and contract negotiations, technical issues with apps and other devices, people from your past reaching out to you and if you are able to travel at the moment cancellations and delays. As a whole Mercury’s retrograde is a period that invites us to rethink, revisit and re-evaluate.
To avoid costly mistakes you should get into the habit of triple checking all documents and data. If something is not clear question it and get it clarified in writing. Assumptions and verbal agreements will not work in your favour during this transit. This is specifically key in regard to project budgets and collaborator fees.
While Mercury is retrograding it’s best not to enter into any new contracts or agreements as not all the details regarding the extent of your responsibilities have come to light. The one exception to this is if you are signing an agreement with someone you have worked with before, as Mercury retrograde invites us to reconnect with and revisit previous projects and relationships. Additionally, if you are planning a large scale launch of a new product or project it would be preferable to delay executing this until Mercury has returned to full strength on Friday 18th February as with the planet’s full strength behind you the launch will have a better reception.
Mercury also rules technology so any purchases of expensive electrical equipment should also be delayed, if they are required urgently make sure you opt in for an additional warranty. As a rule I would strongly recommend backing up all important documents on an external drive or via the cloud as well as password protecting anything highly confidential.
Although Mercury retrograde officially ends on Thursday 3rd February, much like when you wake up with a killer hangover, it takes a while for the planet to feel like its usual self again. This shadow period of any retrograde (two weeks pre-retrograde and two weeks post) is when the planet is at its most mischievous so don’t rush to launch, sign or purchase anything significant during this time. To make the best of Mercury’s retrograde period I would encourage you to revisit old projects, inspirational places (if COVID restrictions allow) and reach out to past collaborators. The work you do in these areas will reap rewards in the months to follow.
Monday 17th January ~ Full moon in Cancer (28 degrees)
Full moons ask us to focus on the the person, place or thing that is right in front of us and bring with them a culmination of sorts. A Full Moon in planet’s home sign of Cancer is undeniable in its power. It asks us to manifest nourishment (for both others and ourselves) and create a sanctuary to cleanse ourselves of any residual emotional energy we may have absorbed from others before heading into the new lunar cycle. Yesterday’s conjunction between the Sun and Pluto will support you in finding the strength and leadership ability you require to come out on top in a fiercely competitive situation. Additionally, Neptune’s friendly angle to all three planets suggest that an artistic project that is coming to an end will be well received.
Tuesday 18th January ~ Uranus goes direct (Taurus 11 degrees)
Uranus the revolutionary turns direct having been retrograde since 19th August 2021. Remaining in the sign of Taurus this suggests that more stabilising and grounding times lay ahead.
Wednesday 19th January ~ Sun enters Aquarius
Aquarius season encourages us to concentrate our energy towards intellectual pursuits. Known for their ability to understand and innovate systems we are asked to step back and consider the big picture so that we can make necessary changes that benefit everyone. This season is asking us to focus on the group rather than our personal needs. Although our interest during this period is centred on creating structures that foster equality (particularly in whatever house is ruled by Aquarius in your natal chart) we must not forget the power that self expression brings us.
Sunday 23rd January ~ Sun conjunct Mercury Rx (Aquarius 3 degrees)
This welcomed conjunction brings a moment of clarity to the otherwise foggy Mercury retrograde period. Your ability to communicate ideas and concepts on this day will be quite brilliant.
Monday 24th January ~ Mars enters Capricorn
Mars is exalted in Capricorn, bring us recognition for our abilities to accomplish challenging tasks. When Mars is in Capricorn we are roused to outdo ourselves, steering towards success in whatever it is we find soulful and emotionally fulfilling. Mars in Capricorn calls on us to be a leader and in some aspects a lone wolf. When trailblazing be sure you extend a hand to support future allies and innovators who are coming up behind you.
Friday 28th January ~ Mercury Rx conjunct Pluto (Capricorn 27 degrees)
This is the perfect time to review budgets and cut out any unnecessary overspend. This supportive merging with Pluto, planet of hidden resources suggests that you will find additional resources that can add value to your work.
Sunday 30th January ~ Sun square Uranus (Aquarius - Taurus at 11 degrees)
This harsh angle between the Sun and Uranus may bring news to light that appears to have come out of nowhere. Electronics will be particularly vulnerable today, make sure you back up any important data and wait before installing software updates.
