Description

In this heartfelt conversation, Andrea Lawful-Sanders speaks with Kent Julye about the tragic death of his son Zachariah, 19, who was one of 506 Philadelphians killed by gun violence in 2022. As Kent shares his family’s navigation of their new normal and commitment to honoring Zachriah’s life through youth empowerment initiatives, he reveals a personal battle with prostate cancer that has both compounded his grief and centered his faith all at once.

Kent and Andrea’s conversation spans the joys and challenges of parenting young Black men, collective trauma and healing, the health and wellness of Black men, the importance of intentionality in marriage when faced with the unimaginable, and the role of trust in community storytelling.

WELLNESS WARNING: This episode contains details of gun violence, a cancer battle, and the experiences of Black youth with policing, in educational spaces and beyond. Please prioritize your wellness and listen, if you so choose, at your pace and with mindfulness of your body’s communication regarding your needs.
