Do you ever start conversations with strangers or coworkers just for them to die after a few seconds or minutes? This can be a really awkward exchange and it can make small talk feel like a drag.
In Episode 3 of the Peach Teach English Podcast, I discuss 7 tips to help you maintain effective conversations:
* Be interested in your conversation partner’s life and stories
* Don’t give short answers. Respond in detail.
* Ask W/H Questions (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How).
* Find common ground such as similar interests or hobbies.
* Be an active listener reacting to comments and asking questions.
* Balance the conversation. Don’t let one person dominate the interaction.
* Engage in the media so that you have go-to topics to talk about!
Remember, it’s normal to be nervous about making mistakes, but don’t let that stop you! The only way to get better at English conversation is to do it! Put your skills to the test, learn from your mistakes, and give yourself the chance to let your English speaking skills grow.
I challenge you to strike up a conversation with someone new and challenge yourself to keep the conversation going and don’t forget to apply all the tips that you learned today! It can also be helpful to have some go-to conversation starter questions. Mine are:
* What are you into these days?
* What are your goals at the moment?
