Hebrews 11 is described as the “faith chapter”—testimonies of men and women who responded to God’s faithfulness. They were helped and empowered by his presence to “seek a city with foundations whose builder and maker is God.” They did not all see the fullness of what was promised to them, but they remained loyal.
Faith is so much more than giving mental assent to a specific ideology. Biblical faith is fidelity, allegiance, loyalty, and trustworthiness. This is how the early church would have understood πίστις — pistis (faith). When we lean into this understanding and begin to walk in fidelity, the words of Jesus come to life in a fresh and empowering way.
