I wrote Humble Heart many years ago. It is based on Isaiah 66:2, “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.”
It is also inspired by David’s prayer in Psalm 51 for God to fulfill his new covenant promise: forgiveness, mercy, a “new heart” and a “willing spirit.”
Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
The most wonderful thing about the gospel—the good news—is that we are not responsible for saving or changing ourselves. We can’t save ourselves from the tyranny of our own appetites aka sinful nature. God knows this and he already made a way for us to be restored to health, to be made new, to be “born again” and filled with his resurrection life so that we can become the people he created us to be: image bearers. Children of light.
Even if we have failed in the most miserable way, God’s promise of forgiveness and the gift of a new heart are available anytime. We need only to ask.
Wherever you are on your faith journey, I hope this song encourages you to reflect on the goodness and faithfulness of your God. I hope you are reminded that all you need to do is return to him and ask for him to do what he already knows you cannot do. He will do the work in you as you choose to live in surrender.
More songs coming soon!
Peace!
