Description

It is difficult to have conversations about restrictions with other Christians. It is especially uncomfortable for those who have experienced abuse due to the mishandling of scriptural texts. But there is a difference between what many refer to as “Christian legalism” and an unhealthy “anything goes” mentality. Restriction/restraint is vital to a healthy humanity.

Legalism implies that by following rules we receive grace. The Gospel tells us that maintaining connection with Jesus through Grace and living according to his Spirit of Grace, we receive power to be all we are called to be and to do all we have been called to do. We are no longer required to bring sacrifices in order to have connection with God. We are now the acceptable sacrifice. Our bodies. Minds. Everything we are.

But not being enslaved to the tyranny of religious law is not an excuse to silence the work of the Holy Spirit.

Instead of casting off the very idea of restriction perhaps it is time for the Church (Christians) to awaken to the freedom and life that comes from consecration.
