Have you ever caught yourself spiraling into worry over something that turned out to be nothing? Maybe a friend didn’t text back, and suddenly, your mind crafted an entire narrative about how they were upset with you. Or perhaps your boss sent a short email, and now you’re convinced you’re in trouble. Sound familiar?
Our minds are master storytellers. They weave intricate plots, fill in missing details, and create assumptions—all in an attempt to keep us safe. But what happens when the stories we tell ourselves aren’t based in reality? What happens when they fuel anxiety, doubt, and fear instead of clarity and confidence?
Why Do We Make Up Stories?
The human brain craves certainty. When there’s an information gap, we rush to fill it—often with worst-case scenarios. This is an evolutionary survival mechanism, but in modern life, it frequently backfires. Instead of keeping us safe, it keeps us trapped in cycles of unnecessary stress.
Think about it:
* Someone cuts you off in traffic, and you assume they’re rude. But maybe they’re rushing to the hospital.
* A friend seems distant, and you think they’re mad at you. But maybe they’re just exhausted.
* Your child’s phone location turns off, and you assume something terrible happened. But maybe their battery just died.
The truth is, we don’t know. But our minds create these dramatic scripts anyway.

The Cost of Negative Assumptions
The stories we tell ourselves shape how we feel. If we default to fear-based narratives, we live in constant worry. These stories impact our relationships, mental health, and even our physical well-being. Chronic stress from negative assumptions can lead to anxiety, sleep disturbances, and emotional exhaustion.
But here’s the good news: you have the power to change the script.
Rewriting the Narrative
If you’re going to assume something, why not assume the best? Instead of imagining the worst-case scenario, try this:
* Assume your friend is busy, not ignoring you.
* Assume your boss’s email is just direct, not a sign of trouble.
* Assume your child is safe and just lost signal.
It’s not about ignoring reality—it’s about choosing a mindset that serves you rather than harms you. When you shift your assumptions from fear to trust, you free yourself from unnecessary stress.
A Challenge for You
For the next two weeks, challenge yourself to rewrite your inner dialogue. When your mind jumps to a fear-based assumption, pause and ask: Is this true? Is there another possible explanation?
Your mind is powerful, but you are the author of your story. Choose to write one filled with faith, optimism, and trust.
Let me know in the comments—what’s one story you’ve caught yourself making up recently? And how did you reframe it?
Until next time, assume the best and watch how your world changes.
