Trigger warning: Sexual assault

Due to the nature of this episode I highly recommend that people check in with their nervous system, and if you are feeling triggered please tend to your needs.

In this episode I explore the topic of sexual assault as it’s experienced within the music scene, festival culture and other broader conversations around community based prevention methods or intervention.

Education, witnessing, respectful dialogues, leadership and communal accountability are primary needs that I propose aren’t being addressed often enough. Instead of pointing the finger or creating spaces of shaming I am attempting to create open dialogues for the betterment of our community spaces, aiming at developing more conscious and safe spaces.

There are numerous internal and external barriers to creating safe containers that contain integral leadership, and perfection is not the goal. Maybe I am still trying to understand what the goal even looks like from a de-colonial, as well as a harm reduction lens.

Other subtopics explored:

- Challenges in reporting SA

- Use of language in safe spaces

- Drugs and SA

- Trained/Seasoned facilitators

- 10 principles of Burning Man

- Education around consent

- The Wheel of consent

- Unconsciously making agreements

- Perpetuating colonization through language

Song in intro- "Light of the Mountain" by Brandon Tilt

I acknowledge that I learn, grow and heal on the unceded ancestral lands of the Kwikwetlam first nation, the Stolo and the Tseil-Watuth first nations. These lands were never abandoned nor surrendered by those with the ancestral rights to steward and protect these lands.

I honor and respect the elders, the children, the land stewards, the land protectors, the medicine keepers, and the men and women of all indigenous nations.

Huy ch q’u (thank you) to those who support the indigenous communities and actively decolonize their minds and their spirits.

Aho Mitakuye Oyasin, All my relations.
