Let’s be blunt: Ballot initiatives won’t save you.
They won’t protect abortion rights, adult-use cannabis, paid sick leave, or workers’ rights. Not in the places where you need it most. Not anymore.
If you think you can reform hostile, MAGA-dominated states like Florida, Missouri, or Oklahoma with a citizen initiative and a few good talking points—look at what’s already happening.
In Missouri, 58% of voters supported a paid sick leave initiative—yet the MAGA-dominated legislature gutted it, and the governor signed the repeal. This isn’t a glitch. It’s the governing model.
In Oklahoma, even after voters passed previous reforms, MAGA extremists weaponized state power to implement indoctrination tests for teachers—while cannabis and hemp ballot measures keep failing or stalling.
In Florida, after voters passed a historic amendment restoring voting rights to returning citizens, the GOP legislature imposed a modern-day poll tax—demanding fines and fees before rights are reinstated.
Ballot initiatives? MAGA Republicans have no respect for them. They rewrite, sabotage, or outright ignore the results.
And let’s not forget Arizona, Utah, Mississippi, Ohio, and even South Dakota. Ballot wins are gutted by courts, undermined by legislatures, or reversed by executive power grabs.
What does this mean for cannabis legalization, abortion rights, environmental protection, workers’ rights, and civil liberties?
It means this is no longer a direct democracy fight. This is a power struggle.
The only path forward is to start firing the people in power—the MAGA-aligned governors, attorneys general, and state legislators who make it their mission to crush voter-approved progress.
That’s why we launched the Change Maker Initiative.

So no, another ballot initiative won’t save Missouri’s paid sick leave fight. It won’t fix Florida’s broken cannabis access. It won’t rescue Oklahoma from theocratic state capture.
Only changing who holds power will.
