As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the world, one region stands out for its comparatively effective prevention and management response: East Asia. As of late May, the number of reported deaths per capita from COVID-19 across East Asia is lower than in other regions – most notably Western Europe and the United States. In addition, with the exception of the city of Wuhan where the pandemic originated, no other East Asian country saw its entire healthcare system overwhelmed as a result of COVID-19. Furthermore, East Asian countries, other than partially in China, avoided the widespread full lockdowns prevalent across Europe and most of the United States.We sit down to hear from two experts from King’s College London about their research outlining what lessons can East Asia offer to prevent and manage the next pandemic – starting with a potential second wave of COVID-19?
