In 1804, Lewis and Clark began their westward expedition in St. Louis, crossing the Mississippi River with a keelboat and their Newfoundland dog, Seaman. Fast-forward 221 years, and we’re doing the same thing basically, but in our case, we’re heading eastward, crossing the Mississippi in our Range Rover, with our mini dachshund, Finn.
Last week, we kicked off a two-week road trip in the ultimate city to start a road trip. This was the first time, for both us, spending meaningful time in St. Louis, and we LOVED it.
We ate and drank at some wonderful restaurants, including a gay-owned salad concept I wrote about, and Jalea, marking the second half of a cross-country collaboration with a crew of chefs in Jacksonville (I went to the Jacksonville one, and it was my favorite meal of summer).
And of course, we had to explore the gayborhood and get martinis at the most wonderfully named queer bar, Platypus. Because, much like Lewis and Clark, we love to start an expedition at a queer bar.
Where we stayed: Angad Arts Hotel
Where we ate/drank: Jalea, Casa Don Alfonso, Neon Greens, Clementine’s Ice Cream, None of the Above, Sado, Platypus
Where we explored: Gateway Arch National Park, St. Charles, City Foundry STL, The Hill
Thank you for reading, following, and listening!

Matt and Nathan
Thank you for following The Gay Lane. To support independent queer creators, please consider subscribing or making a donation. We take great Pride in authenticity and originality, and that means going the extra mile — or thousands of miles — to celebrate queer culture in unexpected places. This may sound simple, but it takes a great deal of intentional effort, time, and resources to bring this to life with the quality and care that we believe it deserves. Your support makes all the difference.
