Do not get scared of this term- if you google it up you will see a lot of complicated words. Simply put cognitive dissonance is when some new information is given to you and it goes against your beliefs and the ideologies you already have, and you choose to ignore it and stay inside your comfort level.
Examples can be- you know that eating meat means killing animals and harming them. But it goes against your belief of meat being tasty and you choose to ignore the negative aspect of it, instead giving some excuses- “You Only Live Once” or counter arguments towards non-meat eating individuals.
(Don’t want to get into the debate- this was just an example.)
So, I found that this psychological term- cognitive dissonance- is very common in individuals following an unhealthy lifestyle as well.
They know that eating too much sugar or skipping workouts/meals is not good for their health, but for short term comforts they opt to either -
* Make an excuse that it is just one piece of cake.
OR
* Choose to say- that they had a long tiring day and they don’t want to exert more.
This is something which I face and I have seen individuals face, on a regular basis- deciding whether or not to get up and workout or choose to say that I will start from Monday.
Well, I would just say that there is only one solution to this- to toughen up, get out of your comfort zone, and think about what you have been restricting yourself to just because something goes against your belief system or your comfort zone. The ones who choose to take a tough call and do it can really benefit from that.
Question:
What aspect of your life do you have a cognitive dissonance towards? Let me know!
Quote for this week:
Work on yourself first. A healthy body and mind is what allows you to be in healthy relationships. You need to be able to be strong and self-aware in order to step up for others- to be a good friend, a good partner, a good parent- you cannot do this when you are broken yourself.
