Hey guys, it’s Scott.
It is Wednesday, May 20th. Big day for the Absolute Universe. I’m out in California. I’m actually standing in LAX right now. I’m here to sign some books and do some DC stuff, but mostly because it’s our middle son’s 15th birthday and he really wanted to come out to L.A. and do some stuff, so Jeanie and he are coming out in a day or so and we’re gonna go around and just try and spoil him a bit. He’s a huge sports fan. so we’re going to go to some sports card stores, maybe catch a game. Very excited about it.
But work wise, I also just wanted to take an opportunity to say thank you, guys! As you’ve seen through the rumors and reports and stuff, the sales on Absolute Green Arrow were great.
It’s a really daring book. It’s out today, I would really encourage you guys to go check it out. I’m so proud of what Pornsak and Rafa and the whole team did on this one. That pitch came in and it just felt like something so urgent. Those guys are old friends, I’ve known both of them now 15+ years, so you try to be very objective when these things come in but you’re always worried if a friend pitches something and it’s just not good or not strong enough where you still have to say no. And with this one it was such a relief that it was like, just a fantastic take.
Speaking of that too, Absolute Catwoman.
We saw the initial numbers and they were equally good. We’re really thrilled. I can’t thank you guys enough for the amount of support you’re showing these books, it’s unbelievable. Che Grayson is an unbelievable rising star, a fantastic person, fantastic writer. Can’t wait for you to see what they’re capable of on this. Bengal is a superstar and I think he even pushes his work and his mastery further with this one. Giovanna Niro is incredible on colors and Lucas Gattoni is great with lettering. So again, thank you guys so so much.
Also, a lot of people have been coming up to me at cons saying they enjoyed the cliffhanger class, so I thought I’d do another one maybe really soon, maybe in the next week or so. I was going to do cold opens this time because people had a lot of questions about beginnings and ends. So let's do cold opens. What do you think? I'll set a time soon.
And lastly, I just wanted to say thank you guys also again about the Eisners. I mean, the voting is open now. And I don't mean to harp on it, I'm sorry. I hope it doesn't seem like pushing too hard, but we like to pretend sometimes these things don't matter, but being recognized by your peers and your friends and the whole comic community, it means a lot. And again i just want to put a word in for Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin and the team. Nick and Frank weren’t nominated for interior art or colors so the award that really speaks to i think the day in day out grinds that those guys are under is the Best Continuing Series one.
It would mean a lot to get to share in that with them. But Nick is nominated for Best Cover Artist.
Clayton Cowles is nominated for Best Lettering.
And our annual, which was an incredible display of work from Daniel Warren Johnson, Meredith McLaren, and pal James Harren, was nominated for Best Single Issue, so I hope you’ll consider that there as well.
Sso many great friends nominated in these categories and other categories, I hate even bringing it up. I mean, we have friends in the Absolute Universe in Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman and so many other friends like Francesco Francavilla in Cover Art, Martin Simmonds in Multimedia, and then Deniz, of course, just rocking out. He’s become one of my closest friends the last couple years, and with Absolute Martian Manhunter, he and Javi Rodriguez are recognized in so many categories.
Exquisite Corpses in New Series… I mean there’s just so many great books that it feels weird to even ask you, but again the team didn’t expect a lot of the pressure that’s on the book this year. And it comes with so many great benefits and it’s a thrill and the joy of a lifetime to get to work on something that people are responding to, but there’s just a lot of extra pressure with that, too. And I’m used to it from Batman, but it’s a lot to put on guys who haven’t had it before. To watch them work the way they do and to see them just turn out such great issues month after month, panel after panel, I just want to put in one last word for them. If you could take some time before June 5th it would mean a lot to us, so thank you guys so so much, the whole community and especially retailers. I just got a code from DC to try it and I love it. It’s unbelievable. And I get to play as Absolute Batman!
So anyway check it out. I played all the LEGO games I’m not just shilling for it. My kids used to love them, so it was a lot of fun and now they love this one. So anyway, go check it out. Thanks!
