I originally went to Ashfield Massachusetts looking for Dr. Charles Knowlton. I discovered Samuel Ranney entirely by accident, and along with him the peppermint oil industry and the peddler trade. This “tangent” became my PhD dissertation and a book in the Yale Agrarian Studies series.
